Stanley P. L. Leong, MD
Center for Melanoma Research and Treatment, Department of Surgery, California Pacific Medical Center, San Francisco, CA, USA
Prof. Leong joined the California Pacific Medical Center in November 2009 as Chief of Cutaneous Oncology, Associate Director of the Center for Melanoma Research and Treatment and Member of the California Pacific Medical Center Research Institute from his previous position as Professor of Surgery and Director of the Sentinel Lymph Node Program, University of California San Francisco School of Medicine. His current research interest is in the molecular mechanism of cancer metastasis based on the clinical outcome of patients following resection of their primary tumor and sentinel lymph nodes.
Prof. Leong has been sitting on many positions since 1974 and has won numerous Honors & Awards since 1981, such as he is the Chair of Outcomes Research Committee of the Society of Surgical Oncology and Member of NCI Challenge Grant Review Committee in 2009.
While he was at UCSF, he initiated the 1st International Symposium on Cancer Metastasis and the Lymphovascular System: Basis for Rational Therapy in 2005. Rational cancer therapy is based on a thorough understanding of the mechanisms of cancer metastasis through the lymphovascular system. Cancer patients can be classified into separate subgroups based on genomic profile and specific disease biomarkers, with implications for future research and evolving treatment strategies. Biomarkers will be thoroughly examined for their ability to define cancer metastasis and as targets for specific therapy in the symposium. Perhaps, more uniquely, the symposium will bring the basic scientists, radiologists and clinicians together resulting in cross fertilization between these disciplines. Such cross fertilization will enhance the translation of basic science into clinical application and bring clinical problems to challenge the basic scientists. Thus, the symposium is able to link the bench to the bedside and vice versa.
