The article (1) titled “ESM1 promotes triple-negative breast cancer cell proliferation through activating AKT/NF-κB/Cyclin D1 pathway” (doi: 10.21037/atm-20-7005), unfortunately contains several errors that need to be corrected.

The image in the upper right corner of Figure 2F, which represents the migration of the control shRNA-expressing MDA-MB-231 cells, was selected incorrectly. This image should be replaced with the correct one.

In the legend of Figure 2, the order of the parts corresponding to Figure 2E-2I was incorrect. The correct order is: (E) colony formation assay on MDA-MB-231; (F) migration assay on MDA-MB-231; (G) migration assay on MDA-MB-468; (H) invasion assay on MDA-MB-231; (I) invasion assay on MDA-MB-468.

The caption “MDA-MB-468” in Figure 4 was accidentally misplaced between Figure 4D and Figure 4F, which should be at the bottom of Figure 4C.

In the legend of Figure 4, the order of the parts corresponding to Figure 4C-4F was incorrect. The correct order is: (C) CCK-8 assay on MDA-MB-468; (D) migration assay on MDA-MB-231; (E) migration assay on MDA-MB-468; (F) invasion assay on MDA-MB-231.

The updated version of Figure 2, containing the correct image for the “Control” in Figure 2F, and the updated version of Figure 4 with the correct position of the caption “MDA-MB-468”, together with the correct legends for both figures, are shown below. These errors did not significantly affect either the results or the conclusions of the paper.

Figure 2 ESM1 knockdown decreases in vitro cell proliferation, migration and invasion in both MDA-MB-231 and MDA-MB-468 cells. (A) Western blot result shows the knockdown of ESM1 expression in MDA-MB-231 cells by three shRNAs and shRNA1 was chosen to establish stable transgenic cell line for further analyses due to its most robust knockdown effect. (B) Western blot result shows the knockdown of ESM1 protein expression in MDA-MB-468 cell by three shRNAs and shRNA3 was chosen to establish stable transgenic cell line for further analyses. (C) CCK-8 assay; (E) colony formation assay; (F) migration assay; (H) invasion assay on ESM1-shRNA1-MDA-MB-231 and Control-MDA-MB-231 cells. (D) CCK-8 assay; (G) migration assay; (I) invasion assay on ESM1-shRNA3-MDA-MB-468 and Control-MDA-MB-468 cells. Scale bar, 360 µm. ***, P<0.001.
Figure 4 ESM1 overexpression enhances in vitro proliferation, migration and invasion of TNBC cell. (A) CCK-8 assay; (B) colony formation assay; (D) migration assay; (F) invasion assay on MDA-MB-231 cells transfected with ESM1-PCDNA3 and PCDNA3 control plasmids respectively. (C) CCK-8 assay; (E) migration assay; (G) invasion assay on MDA-MB-468 cells transfected with ESM1-PCDNA3 and PCDNA3 control plasmids respectively. Scale bar, 360 µm. *, P<0.05; **, P<0.01; ***, P<0.001.
