Weight or metabolism: which deserve more attention in obesity?
Abstract
Obesity has become an important public health issue worldwide. A previous study has indicated that age-standardized average body mass index (BMI) increased from 21.7 kg/m2 in 1975 to 24.2 kg/m2 in 2014 in men, and from 22.1 to 24.4 kg/m2 in women worldwide (1). With regard to children, it has been demonstrated that the global age-standardized prevalence of obesity increased from 0.7% in 1975 to 5.6% in 2016 in girls (5–19 years old), and from 0.9% to 7.8% in boys (5–19 years old) (2).
